Tadanori Yokoo
1936年兵庫県生まれ。美術家。72年にニューヨーク近代美術館で個展。その後もパリ、ヴェネツィア、サンパウロ、など各国のビエンナーレに出品し、パリのカルティエ財団現代美術館など各国の美術館で個展を開催。15年高松宮殿下記念世界文化賞、令和2年度東京都名誉都民顕彰。7月17日より東京都現代美術館での大規模な個展が開催される。

About Program
このプログラムは、オリンピック・パラリンピックが開催される東京を文化の面から盛り上げる芸術・文化の祭典「Tokyo Tokyo FESTIVAL」の中核を彩る事業として企画されたオリジナルプログラムです。
“日本中・世界中から熱い視線が注がれる2021年夏の東京に世界最大級のパブリックアートを掲げ、FESTIVALのシンボルメッセージにしたい”という想いから企画されました。
巨大壁画アートの掲出地には、東京を象徴する視認性の高い場所として、日本最大のターミナル駅である東京駅の正面に立つ丸ビル・新丸ビルの巨大なグラス・ウォール（ガラスの壁面）を選定しました。
アートの街としても知られる丸の内のランドマークであり、街のシンボルとして長年にわたり親しまれてきた丸ビルと新丸ビルが、この夏限定で巨大なキャンバスに変貌します。

This new program is designed to be the core of "Tokyo Tokyo FESTIVAL", an art and cultural festival that enlivens Tokyo, where the Olympics and Paralympics are to be held.
It sprung from the idea of making the world's largest public art installation in Tokyo in the summer of 2021. With the games focusing peoples attention from all over Japan and around the world, it is designed as a symbol of the message FESTIVAL.
The large glass walls of the Marunouchi Building and New Marunouchi Building, were chosen as the venue as they stand in front of Tokyo Station, the largest station in Japan and a highly visible symbol of Tokyo.
For this summer only, the Marunouchi Building and New Marunouchi Building, landmarks of the Marunouchi area, widely known as Tokyo’s art hub and a symbol of the city for many years, will be transformed into a pair of huge canvases.

起用アーティストについて
The artists
このグラス・ウォールに掲示する巨大壁画アートを手がけるのは、1964年東京オリンピックのデザインチームとしても活躍し、長きにわたって日本の美術界を牽引してきた世界的アーティスト横尾忠則氏と、ご息女であり画家として注目を集める美美氏のお二人です。
親子での初めての大規模競作となる今回の企画では、お二人に同一のコンセプトでそれぞれのアート作品を制作いただき、横尾忠則氏の作品を新丸ビルに、美美氏の作品を丸ビルに掲出します。
アーティストの起用に際しては、作品を掲出する場所が対になる2つのタワーであることをふまえ、当初より兄弟や夫婦、親子のような相関関係を持つ方を候補として検討を重ねる中、それぞれに強い存在感を持って活躍されている横尾忠則氏・美美氏にお引き受けいただくこととなりました。
スピリチュアルで、奇想の先鋭的な世界を表現する横尾忠則氏と、日常的な事物を、丹念に愛玩的に描く美美氏という、それぞれ異なる作品世界や表現を持つお二人が今回のために制作した作品が、丸ビルと新丸ビルという相対関係にある二つの巨大キャンバスで共演することになります。

Tadanori Yokoo is a world-class artist who was part of the design team for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics and has been a leader in the Japanese art world for many years. His co-artist will be Mimi Yokoo, his daughter and renowned artist.
These large scale murals will be first large-scale collaboration between parent and child. They were asked to create their own art works using the same concept. Tadanori's work will appear on the New Marunouchi Building and Mimi's work on the Marunouchi Building.
The artists were chosen, with thought given to that with two paired towers as the site, artists with connections to each other such as brothers, couples, a parent and child would be ideal. Eventually Tadanori and Mimi with their strong connection to each other were chosen.
Tadanori expresses the fantastic cutting-edge nature of the world while Mimi draws on the everyday carefully and petitely. The works created for this installation by two people with different worlds and expressive forms will be side by side on the two huge canvases that are in a paired relationship at the Marunouchi Building and the New Marunouchi Building.

Born in 1936 in Hyogo prefecture. Artist.
He held a solo exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1972. He continued to exhibit his work at biennales in Paris, Venice, Sao Paulo, and other countries, and held solo exhibitions at museums around the world, including the Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain in Paris. He was awarded the Prince Takamatsu Memorial Prize for World Culture in 2015, and was designated as honorary citizen of Tokyo in 2020. A large-scale solo exhibition of his work will be held at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo from July 17.

Painter. Made her debut in 1994 with the exhibition "Tadanori & Mimi YOKOO," and since her first solo exhibition in 1995, has held exhibitions in Tokyo and other cities throughout Japan. In 2000, she was in charge of Spring Summer 2000 of PLEATS PLEASE ISSEY MIYAKE MILLENNIUM, and also has released collaborations with “me ISSEY MIYAKE ‘MIMI YOKOO’” from the first project (2017) to the third (2020).
企画コンセプトについて
The concept of this project
今回の企画のコンセプトとなるのは「宇宙 COSMO POWER」です。永遠に成長し続ける広大な宇宙を構成する無数の生命体。
その微小な生命体の活動自体が、連なり、集合することで大きなエネルギーとなり、未来へと成長しつづけるうねりを生み出す。
この宇宙生命の大きなうねり＝エネルギーを、東京から世界へそして未来へ向けて発信したいという思いが込められています。
このコンセプトを元に横尾忠則氏・美美氏にはそれぞれ、この宇宙生命の根源をなす要素として水（aqua）と火（ignis）をテーマとしたオリジナル作品を制作いただきました。
当初本企画は、2020年夏に実施予定でしたが、新型コロナウイルス感染症の拡大によって、一年間の延期を余儀なくされました。横尾忠則氏・美美氏とは、この延期決定以降も協議を重ねた上で、2021年夏にふさわしい、東京から世界、現在から未来へと届く、全てを超越するようなエネルギーを包含するテーマが設定されました。
対になるテーマを表現するお二人の作品を通じて、太古の昔に描かれた壁画の存在が時代や場所を超えて、現代に様々な発見やイマジネーションをもたらしてくれるように、国籍・時代を超えたメッセージを広く発信できればと考えています。
また、総面積7,000㎡以上の巨大な壁面で、上下左右様々な場所から、時に移動しながら見ることを前提とした今回の作品制作にあたっては、鑑賞する場所や視点によって異なる発見が得られるような手法を取り入れて制作しています。

The concept of this project is “Universe COSMO POWER”. Innumerable entities make up the vast universe and continue to grow endlessly.
The activity of minute life forms become energy by connecting and gathering together creating a swell that continues to grow into the future.
This project contains the desire to transmit this energy, this big swell of universe life forms, from Tokyo to the world and to the future.
Based on this concept, we asked Tadanori and Mimi to create original works with themes of water (aqua) and fire (ignis) as they are the elements which form the basis of space-life.
While this project was originally planned to be held in summer 2020, due to the spread of COVID-19, it was postponed for a year.
Discussions continued to be held with Tadanori and Mimi after the postponement decision was made.
A theme suitable for summer 2021 that embraced the energy that transcends from Tokyo to the world and from the present to the future was chosen.
Through the works of the two artists expressing themes in a pair, like the mural drawn in ancient times that transcend time and the places they were made and bring discoveries and imagination to the present day, it is hoped that this instillation can send a message which transcends nationality and time itself.
Also, as the art works can be view from various vantage points from higher or lower as well as left and right of center across the massive 7000㎡+ surface areas, the artists have adopted a method that allows you to find different discoveries depending on where you look from.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government and Arts Council Tokyo sought a wide range of creative and innovative ideas from the public for projects that would become the core of the cultural programs for the Tokyo Tokyo FESTIVAL. From a total of 2,436 project proposals submitted from within Japan and overseas, 13 were selected for implementation. The 13 projects are collectively named “Tokyo Tokyo FESTIVAL Special 13,” and are being implemented in sequence.
